Binding Local Person Pronouns Without Semantically Empty Features

چکیده
I shall refer to the reading in (1b) as the ‘bound reading’ of sentence (1), and to the reading in (1a) as the ‘strict reading’ of (1). The availability of the bound reading in (1) and sentences akin to it has garnered a healthy amount of attention in recent years (Heim 1991, Kratzer 1998, Heim 2002, Rullmann 2003, Schlenker 2003, von Stechow 2003, Kratzer 2005, Schlenker 2005). The prima facie interest of such sentences is that they seem to suggest that local person pronouns can be bound, contrary to the so-called ‘Fixity Thesis’, famously embodied in the proposals of Kaplan (1977).

On the Semantics of Phi Features on Pronouns
This thesis investigates three topics relating to the semantics of phi features on pronouns. Part I focuses on gender features on pronouns. Following previous studies (Cooper 1983, Heim & Kratzer 1998), I claim that they are presupposition triggers. Based on this assumption, I show that predicates containing bound gendered pronouns have an assertive meaning that does not entail the gender presu...
متن کاملDependent plural pronouns with Skolemized choice functions
The present paper discusses two interesting phenomena concerning phifeatures on plural pronouns: (i) plural pronouns that denote atomic individuals (‘dependent plural pronouns’), and (ii) plural pronouns with more than one binder (‘partial binding’). A novel account of these two phenomena is proposed, according towhich all occurrences of phi-features are both semantically and morphologically re...
متن کاملDependent Plural Pronouns with Skolemized Choice Functions A Semantic Account of Phi-Features on Plural Pronouns
This paper discusses two theoretically challenging phenomena concerning the phi-features on plural pronouns: (i) ‘dependent plural pronouns’, i.e. plural pronouns that denote atomic individuals, and (ii) partial binding, i.e. plural pronouns with more than one antecedent. I will offer a novel semantic account of these two phenomena where all occurrences of phi-features are both semantically and...
متن کاملFree Variable Economy
Several authors have recently argued that semantic interpretation is subject to economy constraints. In particular, Fox (1999) argued that the interpretation of pronouns is subject to binding economy, which favors local binding over non-local binding. The present paper points out a problem for binding economy. The aim, then, is to see if this problem can be resolved in a conservative way, that ...
متن کاملVPE as a Proform: Some Consequences for Binding
According to the proform view of VP Ellipsis (VPE), elided VP’s share with pronouns the properties of being syntactically unstructured and being semantically identified with an antecedent. This paper explores some consequences of the proform view of VP Ellipsis, concerning binding theory and the binding of traces. Since the VPE is syntactically empty, syntactic binding theory constraints do not...
